Did anyone ask people if they wanted to cut this kind of stuff to pay for the olympics? I think knowing our history is really important and how is stuff about 2007 going to carry on in schools? How many schools are teaching it anyway? An do they get the fact it didn't stop?
JL

    Author: Izzy
Subject: 2008
Posted: 07 Jun 2007 at 2:41pm

Hello there Daniel

Very interesting question - if the budget cuts leading into 2012 reduce opportunity, for community groups, to undertake activities around heritage and history then of course that's deeply troubling...

More worryngly for me, these activities are essential for empowering communities. They offer the opportunity to develop ideas, skills, and experience, as well as expanding mindsets through the engagement of partners and other communtiies.

This coupled with the clear need to enable people to be able to determine their place in society - to develop a sense of place and belonging - and other identity-related concerns, demosntrates the regenerative power of heritage projects.

Regeneration [ of communities ]occurs on a number of levels - we need to remember this...it is as much about the wellbeing of the individual as a person, and investment in them, as it is about how our environment might look, or the number jobs that we can create.

I've always thought of heritage projects in this light...

They are a natural point of entry for engaging community groups - and particularly those that have undergone social and ecnomic difficulty.

Such projects provide the opportunity to engage sections of our communities who would otherwise remain outside of the mainstream, and whose lives have been characterised marginalisation.

As such, for me, 'Black History' is critically important as a tool for the engagement of groups who would otherwise remain out on the margins...

We will have to wait to see the kind of Budget cuts that will take place - but any kind of cut will most certainly impact on the availability of opportunity...

Very worrying - especially since, I believe, heritage projects have been one of the success stories within the voluntary sector...

Izzy

My concern is how this heightened profile can be sustained. A lot of the events which have contributed to this raised awareness are the result of HLF funding. This will inevitably decrease in 2008 because of the need to subsidise the 2012 Olympics. So we will go into 2008 with people wanting to do new projects, wanting to find out more about Black history but the funding will not necessarily be there.

Daniel
