Cooking
We don't actually know for sure that cooking was one of Constance's hobbies, what we do know is that we have two cookbooks deposited in her archive and from that we can only assume that cooking was dear to her.
Cookbooks are an extremely interesting historical and sociological source. The cook book that the images to the right are taken from has a Jewish glossary of terms (a Balaboosta is an excellent homemaker). It also shows some interesting ingredients to be used, such as chicken necks and feet.
In Constance's case her cook books have symbolic importance with regards to her faith. As a Jew she can obviously not eat certain foods and must prepare certain ceremonial foods also.
Recipes and cookbooks feature in several of the archives catalogued as part of the Connecting Histories Project.

Rose's Hobbies
In the archive are a number of certificates relating to Rose's musical talents. The certificate above is for first grade solo singing, Rose achieved this in 1926. She also has certificates for singing, rudiments of music and ear training.
When Rose died Constance gave a donation to Singers Hill Synagogue for a piano. |
Poetry and writing
Constance has quite a few poems by her own hand deposited in her archive. She also has seven diaries deposited. Writing was obviously a passion of hers. It was perhaps that passion to write, recollect and remember that made her decide to keep an archive.
The following image is her diary account from her birthday 1945, "the girls from work" collected 18/6. |

Cross Stitch
This very pretty handmade broach was given to Constance by Cora for New Year, Rosh Hashanah 5759.
It is another great example of the diversity of materials that can create an archive. |
